Transition Year Re-Launch

Plans for a new and revitalised Transition Year were revealed to parents of 3rd Years at a recent Information Evening.

The new coordinator of TY, Ms Rachael McCormack, outlined to parents how the new programme will look.

Students will study the usual core subjects of Irish (unless exempt)Mathematics and English with a more academic focus and will be assessed three times during the year.

They will get to do subject samplings from the Leaving Certificate Programme, which include; History/Geography/Politics (10 week block of each), Religious Education, Business/Accountancy/Economics (10 week block of each), Art, Home Economics, Construction/Design Communication Graphics/Engineering (10 week block of each), Music, French/Italian and Biology/Chemistry/Physics (10 week block of each)

Students will get to choose electives such as Hair & Beauty, Childcare, Digital Media Literacy, Car Maintenance, Film Studies, Photography and Horticulture

Thee will be a major focus on Information Technology and STEM Activities as students will do IT classes and will be responsible for creating an Eportfolio of their work throughout the year. Students will also get to participate in Coding, Robotics and Virtual Reality classes.

Wellbeing is an integral part of the year and all students take part in Physical Education, Personal Development, Relationships and Sexuality Studies as well as a Career Investigation.

Work Experience will this year consist of three blocks in November, February and April. This is an essential and integral part of the programme.

There are lots of trips, events and speakers planned for the year including a visit to the Ploughing Championships, the Gaeltacht and Ziplining.

Leadership opportunities are rife for Transition Years. They are strongly encourage and rewarded for getting involved in any of the following; Senior Mentor Programme, Green Schools, Sports Council, Student Representative Council, Coding Club, Science Club and Digital Champions.

The cost of Transition Year remains at €250, in addition to locker and journal fees.

There will also an international trip which is planned for May 2020 and details of cost and itinerary will be revealed in September.
