The Green Schools Committee - comprising about thirty people (staff and students from all years) has regular meetings and Cabinteely Community School has achieved three school flags aready: Litter and waste, Energy and Travel.
Every two years there is a theme (current theme: Biodiversity) and the committee comes up with initiatives to promote this theme. Last year for Cycle Promotion for example, students were rewarded for cycling to school.
In 2019-20, we had a workshop with Susan Adams called called 'Education for Sustainability, plastic Free Schools'.
Since then a number of number or Green School students, TY's and prefects have developed a plan to become a Plastic-Free School.
They created and carried out surveys with all students to see how much single-use plastic is used.
They surveyed the bins.
They created a Green-Schools crest/logo to use on posters / social media
The GSC also researched cost of re-usable flasks for all students.
We are also due to get more plants and trees from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council which has been postponed until next year due to Covid-19.
The students have also made a new map of the school grounds to compare how much Biodiversity has changed since last year with plans to make bug-homes and bird houses.
