Transition Year 2019-20
The TY Programme has been revitalised and promises to be a really excellent programme.
The Coordinator of Transition Year is Ms Rachael McCormack.
The programme is compulsory at Cabinteely Community School and is designed to consolidate the work of the Junior Cycle so that students are better fitted to undertake the two-year Leaving Certificate and maximise their results.
The programme also provides courses and activities which would not normally form part of the Leaving Certificate programme. These are expected to provide a broader range of experience for the students and a greater understanding of their future needs.
Core Subjects
All students in the programme take the following core subjects:
- Irish (unless exempt)
- Mathematics
- English
Subject Samplings
Students get sample all Leaving Certificate subjects;
- History/Geography/Politics (10 week block of each)
- Religious Education
- Business Studies
- Art
- Home Economics
- Construction/Design Communication Graphics/Engineering (10 week block of each)
- Music
- French/Italian
- Biology/Chemistry/Physics (10 week block of each)
Electives
Students get to choose from the following ;
- Hair & Beauty/Childcare/Digital Media Literacy
- Car Maintenance/Driver's Theory/Digital Media Literacy
- Film Studies/Photography/Horticulture
Information Technology/STEM Activities
All students do IT classes and are responsible for creating an Eportfolio of their work throughout the year.
Students will also get to participate in the following classes;
- Coding
- Robotics
- Virtual Reality
Wellbeing
Wellbeing is an integral part of the year and all students take part in;
- Physical Education
- Personal Development
- Relationships and Sexuality Studies
- Career Investigation
Work Experience
Each student undertakes three weeks of work experience during the year. This is an essential and integral part of the programme.
Trips and Outings
There are lots of trips, events and speakers planned for the year which will all be confirmed in August on student's return to school.
Leadership
Leadership opportunities are rife for Transition Years. They are strongly encourage and rewarded for getting involved in any of the following;

- Sports Council
- Student Representative Council
- Coding Club
- Science Club
- Digital Champions
Cost of TY
The cost of Transition Year is €250 in addition to locker and journal fees. Some trips may involve travel on public transport and/or lunch money.
There is also an international trip which is planned for May 2020 which will involve and additional cost.
